antique-crimson-wedgwood-jasperware-classical-relief-pitcher-14cm
Antique Crimson Wedgwood Jasperware Classical Relief Pitcher 14cm

This attractive antique Wedgwood Jasperware pitcher is presented in a rich crimson ground colour, crisply decorated with the classic contrasting white reliefs for which the factory is renowned. Measuring approximately 14 cm in height, it is an ideal size for display on a mantel, in a cabinet or as part of a wider Jasperware collection.

The body is of straight-sided cylindrical form, slightly tapering towards the top, with a projecting lip and an applied twisted handle. Around the upper section runs a continuous frieze of high-relief vine leaves and grape clusters, a design closely associated with 19th‑century Wedgwood production. Beneath this, encircling the lower body, is a series of white neo‑classical figures in various poses, including draped maidens, children and putti, together with trees, foliage and urns. These applied reliefs show very good definition, with fine modelling and sharp edges, giving the pitcher a sculptural quality that reads well from all angles.

The interior is glazed in a pale neutral tone for practical use, while the exterior retains the characteristic unglazed matte surface of true Jasperware, which provides a pleasing contrast in both texture and colour. The twisted strap handle is securely attached and finished with applied leaf terminals where it meets the body. The base is impressed simply with ENGLAND and other potter’s or shape marks, typical of late 19th to early 20th‑century Wedgwood export wares.

Condition is generally good for age and type. There is a small area of glaze loss or shallow chip to the inner edge of the rim near the spout, clearly visible in the close‑up photographs. This does not materially affect the stability or overall display and is confined to the inner edge; the main profile of the lip still presents well from the shelf. Elsewhere only minor surface rubbing and light wear can be seen, commensurate with careful use and handling over time. The relief ornament remains well preserved, with no obvious cracks, significant losses or over‑painting detected on inspection of the images.

This crimson ground is less commonly seen than the more familiar blue and green Jasperware, making the piece particularly appealing to collectors seeking to diversify a colour‑themed group. The classical subject matter, refined proportions and neat 14 cm size allow it to harmonise easily with a range of interiors, from traditional to eclectic. Whether displayed alongside other Jasperware, mixed with creamware and stoneware jugs, or used as a small vase for a few stems, it offers both decorative impact and historic interest.

Please refer to all photographs for the best indication of form, decoration and condition. The noted rim glaze loss has been factored into any pricing.
