antique-crimson-wedgwood-jasperware-classical-relief-pitcher-jug
Antique Crimson Wedgwood Jasperware Classical Relief Pitcher Jug

This attractive small pitcher is an authentic piece of English Wedgwood Jasperware, made in the desirable crimson, or deep wine-red, body colour. It is a straight-sided cylindrical jug standing approximately 10 cm high (just under 4 inches, see final image with tape measure for scale). The piece is impressed “WEDGWOOD” on the base together with additional potter’s and shape marks typical of 19th–20th century factory production.

The jug is crafted in unglazed Jasper stoneware, with the characteristic fine, silky matte finish. Against the rich crimson ground, a series of applied white reliefs encircle the body. These classical-style scenes depict robed figures, children and putti beside an altar and brazier, together with trees, floral sprays, a small dog and laurel wreaths. The modelling is crisp, showing good definition in the drapery, foliage and facial details, and the continuous frieze is neatly joined so that the design reads as a flowing narrative around the vessel.

Below the rim runs a high-relief vinous border of acanthus-like leaves, grapes and tendrils, also in white Jasper. This garland is applied both around the neck and onto the top of the handle, visually tying the handle to the body. The handle itself is slightly flattened, with a subtle ribbed modelling that gives a comfortable grip while echoing earlier neoclassical metalwork shapes. The small pinched lip is neatly formed for pouring cream, milk or sauce, and the interior is left in a pale buff tone typical of Jasper bodies.

Condition is described as good, and the photographs confirm that there are no obvious cracks, hairlines or large chips. The applied reliefs appear largely intact, with only the light, expected minor rubbing and tiny manufacturing irregularities that are common in hand-applied Jasperware. The base shows normal shelf wear consistent with age and careful use, but the impressed factory mark remains legible. The rich crimson body colour is even all round, with no significant discolouration or staining visible.

This compact jug would originally have served at table for cream, milk or small quantities of hot sauce, and today it works beautifully as a decorative accent, a miniature flower vase, or as part of a Jasperware or Wedgwood colour collection. The crimson hue is less frequently encountered than the classic pale blue, making it a particularly interesting choice for collectors looking to diversify a display. Its restrained cylindrical profile and all-round classical scenes mean it presents attractively from every angle, ideal for a cabinet or open shelf where it can be viewed in the round.

Please review all photographs to appreciate the fine detail of the applied decoration and the overall condition.
