Rather than the stabbing itself, the vignette shows the moments after, as armed men burst into the room to seize her.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharlotte Corday, a young Norman sympathiser of the Girondins, gained admission to Jean-Paul Marat by claiming to bring the names of traitors and stabbed him in his bath on 13 July 1793. She was tried and guillotined four days later. The Corday and Marat plates of this series were issued for sale as a pair.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis plate comes from the celebrated series of revolutionary portraits issued with the \u003cem\u003eTableaux historiques de la Révolution française\u003c\/em\u003e in Paris. Each plate follows the same format: a finely worked aquatint portrait by \u003cstrong\u003eCharles-François-Gabriel Levachez\u003c\/strong\u003e in a circular medallion, above an etched vignette by \u003cstrong\u003eJean Duplessi-Bertaux\u003c\/strong\u003e showing a defining moment in the sitter's life, with the lettering beneath. The portraits were issued in instalments from the late 1790s and added to the \u003cem\u003eTableaux historiques\u003c\/em\u003e in its 1802 edition; impressions are held by the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFraming and provenance:\u003c\/strong\u003e in an ebonised reeded frame bearing to the reverse the trade label of Samuel Jennings, 16 Duke Street, Manchester Square, London - \"To Her Majesty the Queen \u0026amp; the Royal Family, Estab'd 1824\". The National Portrait Gallery's directory of British framemakers records \u003cstrong\u003eSamuel Jennings, Carver, Gilder \u0026amp; Printseller\u003c\/strong\u003e at 16 Duke Street, Manchester Square, London from 1850 to 1885, so this print has been in an English collection since the Victorian period.
