The elongated quatrefoil form measures approximately 27cm in length, making it a practical yet highly decorative piece for display or occasional use.

The interior is divided visually into shaped cartouches, each painted by hand with bold, almost naive enamel decoration. At the centre is a radiating roundel in red, ochre and blue, surrounded by four scalloped reserves. Two of these contain fantastical lion‑dog or dragon‑like creatures painted in a brilliant cobalt blue with yellow manes, standing on iron‑red platforms, echoing the Chinese Buddhist lion motif much favoured by Worcester decorators in the last quarter of the 18th century. The remaining panels show stylised still‑life groupings of vases and floral arrangements, with strong iron‑red, lemon yellow and deep blue accents and fine sepia foliage.

Between these reserves runs a pale green seeded ground, lightly dotted in black and edged with fine red line work typical of the period. The border is richly detailed with panels of iron‑red scale or trellis pattern, alternating with red scalloped reserves and small blue highlights. These intricate borders frame the central design very effectively and demonstrate the skill of the enameller. The rim undulates gently, giving the dish a softly lobed outline that catches the light and emphasises the hand‑thrown, hand‑finished nature of the piece.

The underside is plain glazed with an unmarked foot, in keeping with early Worcester production where many pieces were left unmarked or bore only painted workman’s marks. The potting and glaze are consistent with late 18th century Worcester porcelain: a slightly greyish, translucent body with a clear glaze pooling around the footrim. The lack of printed decoration, together with the distinctive palette and pseudo‑oriental subject matter, supports an attribution to about 1775–1790.

Condition is described as good for age. There is some expected surface wear to the enamels, particularly on the iron‑red border areas and high points of the rim, commensurate with over two centuries of careful use. Close inspection reveals minor utensil marks and a few small glaze imperfections from firing, typical of early English porcelain. No obvious major cracks or restorations are visible in the images, although a few faint age‑related craze lines and light discolouration can be seen within the central panels, which do not detract from the overall appearance. The edge shows only slight rubbing and tiny nicks rather than significant chips.

Pieces of this form and pattern are comparatively scarce, especially in such presentable condition. The compartmentalised “dragons and vases” decoration, with its combination of mythical beasts and stylised still life, makes the dish a striking focal point in any collection of Georgian ceramics. It would sit comfortably alongside other Worcester polychrome wares of the Dr. Wall and Flight periods, and also pairs well with Chinese export porcelain of the same era due to the shared decorative vocabulary.

For collectors, this serving dish offers an appealing blend of rarity, strong visual impact and authentic 18th century craftsmanship. It is ideal for display in a cabinet, on a dresser or as a table centrepiece, where the unusual shape and vibrant enamelling can be appreciated from all angles. The 27cm length makes it large enough to be functional, yet compact enough for modern interiors. Overall, it is a noteworthy example of Worcester’s adaptation of oriental themes to the English taste in the late 1700s.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0677/4630/0188/files/57_c2f38eea-9ea8-429e-9543-d48ef19dd28a.jpg?v=1767694875
