A large signed lithographic print depicting a Berkshire Type Freight Locomotive, Class S2, executed by the renowned American railway artist Alvin F. Staufer (1923-2014). The print is signed in pencil by the artist within the margin, framed and glazed, and ready to hang.

Alvin F. Staufer was one of the most respected American railroad historians and illustrators of the 20th century. Based in Medina, Ohio, he produced an extensive series of books on American steam locomotives - including the standard reference works on Pennsylvania Power, New York Central Power, B&O Power and Norfolk & Western Power - and a parallel series of finely detailed lithographic prints of individual locomotive types. His prints were produced in limited numbers, signed by the artist, and are now keenly sought after by collectors of railway art and Americana.

The Berkshire 2-8-4 was one of the most powerful and successful American freight locomotive types of the steam era, developed by Lima Locomotive Works in the 1920s and adopted by numerous railroads including the Boston & Maine, Erie, Nickel Plate, C&O and Pere Marquette. The Class S2 was a particularly distinctive variant. Staufer's draughtsmanship captures the engineering of the locomotive in fine technical detail.

Framed dimensions approximately 90 x 36cm. The print presents in good condition under glass with the artist's pencil signature clearly visible. A handsome and substantial piece for the collector of railway memorabilia, American industrial history, or as a strong graphic statement in a study, hallway or man cave.

Collection from Nottingham recommended given the size; UK courier delivery available at cost.
