A handsome antique Bohemian overlay glass oil lamp, late 19th century. The body is of baluster vase form with a ringed waist, executed in white-cased glass cut through to green panels and hand-enamelled with fine floral sprays in red, yellow and blue.
The glass body is mounted on a substantial pierced gilt-brass plinth base, with the original brass gallery and burner mount at the top. The brass work is of good quality with ornate cast decoration to the base.
CONDITION: The brass gallery has a bend — see photographs — which is a cosmetic issue but does not affect the integrity of the piece. The burner is present but the chimney and shade are missing. The lamp is currently set up for oil but is ready to be rewired for electricity as a working table lamp — a straightforward job for any competent lamp restorer or electrician.
Bohemian cut-overlay glass with hand-enamelling represents one of the high points of late-19th century European decorative glass. The combination of white-to-green cutting with floral enamels is particularly desirable.
An attractive piece with versatility — display as an authentic Victorian oil lamp, or convert for use as an electric table lamp where the decorative body becomes the lighting feature.
Dimensions: Approximately 40 cm tall overall, including the brass plinth base.
