An antique hand-coloured engraving titled "Cashiobury Park in Hertfordshire, the Seat of the Earl of Essex".
From Robert Goadby's "A New Display of the Beauties of England", London, c.1773-1776 — one of the most important late-18th century topographical publications, covering the great English country houses. Hand-colouring applied later, in the period style.
Presented in a quality gilt-banded triple-wash mount within a moulded gilt frame.
Historical significance: Cashiobury House near Watford was the principal seat of the Earls of Essex from the 17th century. The house was substantially remodelled by James Wyatt c.1800 in the Gothic Revival style, but this view captures the earlier 17th-century house — the one built by Sir Charles Morrison and completed in 1556, later remodelled by Hugh May for the first Earl of Essex. The whole house was finally demolished in 1922. Pre-demolition views of either iteration are increasingly collectable, particularly to Hertfordshire and Watford collectors.
The plate is in good clean condition, the colour well preserved. Frame and glazing intact.
Dimensions: Framed approximately 37 x 30 cm.
