Antique Caucasian Kuba Rug c1900 Blue Lattice Chichi Hand Knotted Wool 127x155cm

Antique Caucasian rug from the Kuba region, circa 1900, hand knotted in wool on a wool foundation.

The field is a soft abrashed blue with a lattice of serrated leaves. It encloses stepped rosettes in madder red, green, aubergine and ivory, with ivory blossoms where the lattice meets. The field sits within a series of borders:

• a gold and red chequer guard

• a multicoloured barred band

• a red border of cruciform leaf motifs

• an ivory Chichi-type border of diagonal bars and rosettes

• a blue running-hook border

• an outer red and blue diamond guard

The colours are good and the weave is tight and fine. A small woven mark in yellow sits in one corner.

Size: approx. 127 cm x 155 cm (4'2" x 5'1"), excluding fringe.

Condition: honest antique condition, as shown in the photos.

• Splits running in from the centre of both ends, through the outer borders.

• Ends and fringes are worn and frayed.

• Some selvedge loss, with old string overcasting in places.

• The pile is low in areas of the field, and the brown dye has oxidised as is typical.

• A few small spots of wear.
