A decorative Chinese porcelain ovoid jar in the famille verte (wucai) palette, the rounded body painted in bright iron-red, green, blue, yellow and aubergine enamels with a continuous scene of warriors on horseback doing battle across a landscape with fluttering banners. The shoulder and foot are bordered with stylised petal and key-fret bands. The subject is in the manner of the popular military romances such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The base bears a four-character mark in iron red reading Kangxi Nian Zhi (康熙年製, 'Made in the reign of Kangxi'). This is an apocryphal (commemorative) reign mark: the four-character form was rarely used in the actual Kangxi period and is a hallmark of later 'Kangxi revival' wares. In my opinion the jar dates to the late Qing or early Republic period, circa 1875-1920, rather than the 17th/18th century.
Famille verte warrior jars of this type were made in large numbers and remain popular decorative pieces, prized for their vigorous figural painting and strong colour. This example stands approximately 12 cm high (please see the measured photograph).
Offered in good honest antique condition consistent with age and use.
