This charming antique Copeland plate is a fine example of late 19th‑ to early 20th‑century English tableware, decorated in an attractive naturalistic style. Measuring approximately 21 cm in diameter, the plate has a distinctive scalloped rim with softly moulded lobes all around the edge. The rim is finished with a delicate hand‑applied gilded line, which highlights the undulating outline and gives the piece an elegant, finished appearance suitable for either display or refined table use.

The creamy off‑white ground provides a subtle backdrop for the decorative scheme, which features a trailing vine of ivy leaves hand coloured in rich greens, ochres and warm browns. The painter has taken care to vary the tones of the foliage, moving from bright spring greens through to deeper blue‑greens and autumnal browns, so that the garland has a sense of depth and movement as it sweeps across the surface. The vine originates near the lower left of the plate and curves upward and around, drawing the eye across the design and accentuating the circular form.

Balancing the ivy is a single pink rose bloom positioned on the upper right of the plate. The rose, depicted in bud just opening to reveal deeper crimson tones at its centre, adds a romantic focal point to the composition. Its stem and leaves are finely delineated, with careful shading suggestive of hand painting rather than simple transfer work, a technique associated with higher‑quality Copeland productions. Together, the combination of ivy and rose creates a pleasing asymmetrical design which leaves a generous area of open ground, allowing the decoration to breathe and making the plate well suited for cabinet display.

The reverse of the plate is plain, showing the typical smooth glaze of Copeland wares. A lightly impressed circular factory mark is present, along with hand‑painted decorator’s or pattern numbers in iron‑red enamel. The impressed mark appears faint, as is common on earlier examples, but the overall layout is consistent with Copeland’s Stoke‑on‑Trent production. There are no visible chips or cracks in the images provided, and the gilded rim appears substantially intact, indicating that the piece has been well cared for and remains in good, collectible condition for its age. Minor firing specks and light age‑related wear to the glaze may be expected and are typical characteristics of antique English ceramics.

This plate would appeal to collectors of Copeland and Spode, enthusiasts of Victorian and Edwardian botanical designs, and decorators seeking an authentic antique accent with soft, natural colours. Its moderate size of 21 cm makes it versatile: it can be used as a dessert or side plate, a small serving plate for cakes or biscuits, or as a stand‑alone cabinet or wall piece. The scalloped form and understated gilding sit comfortably alongside other floral or ivy‑pattern services, yet the distinctive rose sprig ensures that the plate holds its own as a single decorative object. Whether incorporated into an existing Copeland “vines” collection or displayed on a plate stand as a focal point, it offers both period charm and practical decorative value.
