This striking antique Copeland dessert plate showcases the highly collectible “Grapes & Vines” polychrome pattern, a later 19th‑century development of Spode’s famous pattern no. 3057 first introduced circa 1830. Dating from around 1878–1880, the plate measures approximately 8.5 inches in diameter and is finely potted with a gently scalloped, lobed rim that adds a decorative, undulating outline to the richly colored design.
The front of the plate is fully decorated with exuberant clusters of grapes in shaded greens and purples, intertwined with scrolling vines and large, veined vine leaves rendered in a vivid palette of greens, turquoise, russets, ochres, and soft mauves. The use of multiple transfer outlines, each carefully hand‑coloured in enamel, creates a dense, tapestry‑like surface that exemplifies late Victorian taste for bold color and naturalistic botanical motifs. The crisp enamel work, particularly in the modelling of each individual grape and the veining of the leaves, reflects the high standards of Copeland’s decorators during this period.
The white ground of the body provides a bright contrast to the saturated tones of the foliage, while a network of brown vine tendrils forms a continuous background, giving the design great visual depth. This dramatic treatment makes the plate especially effective for cabinet display, where the intricate pattern can be appreciated when hung on a wall or placed on a stand. Equally, its size and shallow profile make it an ideal dessert or cheese plate, echoing its original Victorian function for serving fruit or sweets at the end of an elegant meal.
The reverse is glazed and shows the characteristic impressed Copeland backstamp, together with additional impressed and painted workman’s marks. These factory marks, combined with the body and style of decoration, support a production date in the late 1870s to around 1880. The plate is formed in a fine, white earthenware/ironstone body typical of Copeland’s durable table wares of the era, engineered to withstand regular use while retaining a refined appearance. The impressed moulding to the reverse corresponds exactly to the scalloped rim seen on the front, demonstrating the quality of the mould work.
Collectors prize the Copeland & Spode Grapes & Vines pattern as one of the most sought‑after 19th‑century vine designs, both for its historical connection to the earlier Spode 3057 issue and for its exuberant polychrome palette. Surviving examples with such strong, unfaded colour are increasingly scarce, making this plate an appealing choice for serious collectors of Victorian British ceramics, Spode and Copeland specialists, and decorators seeking a vibrant accent piece. Whether incorporated into a wall arrangement of antique plates, used as a dramatic serving piece for cheese and fruit, or displayed alone as a focal point, this 8.5‑inch dessert plate offers a superb combination of decorative impact, historical interest, and classic English craftsmanship.
