This early 19th‑century Davenport plate is an attractive and characteristic example of English “Gaudy Dutch” decoration, dating to around 1805–1820. Measuring approximately 24 cm in diameter, it displays the exuberant, hand‑painted palette and bold floral treatment that made this style so popular in the Regency period.

The front of the plate is richly decorated with a dense, all‑over floral design. Broad cobalt blue panels, picked out with fine gilt veining, form stylised leaves or petals that radiate from the centre and provide strong contrast against the off‑white ground. Between and around these are freely painted flowers and foliage in iron‑red, orange, yellow, pink and green enamels. The brushwork is spontaneous and almost naïve in character, typical of early Gaudy Dutch wares, with scrolling tendrils and “squiggle” lines enlivening the background. This patterning reflects both oriental and continental influences but is distinctly English in its boldness and colour balance.

A narrow gilt line encircles the rim, now rubbed in places from use and age. The glaze has the slightly glassy yet softly pooled appearance consistent with early 19th‑century earthenware bodies. The reverse of the plate is undecorated and unmarked, which is common for Davenport pieces of this relatively early date, and shows an ivory‑toned glaze with visible age‑related crazing. The recessed footring and overall profile correspond well with known Davenport production of the period, rather than later Victorian wares.

Condition is commensurate with age and regular use over more than two centuries. There are several rim chips and losses visible in the photographs, including a larger section of damage where the body and glaze have been broken away, exposing the underlying earthenware. Smaller nicks and bites around the edge, general surface scratching, kiln specks and discolouration are also present. The glaze on the reverse exhibits uniform crazing and some staining, giving an attractive antique patina. Enamel colours remain strong, though some minor wear to the enamels and gilding can be expected on the high points of the design.

Despite these flaws, the plate retains significant decorative appeal and historical value. Gaudy Dutch patterns by Davenport are sought after by collectors for their lively colour schemes and importance in the evolution of British transfer‑printed and hand‑painted tablewares. This example, with its vibrant cobalt panels and freehand floral composition, would display well in a cabinet or wall arrangement alongside other early 19th‑century pottery and porcelain. It also offers a useful reference piece for students and collectors of Davenport and Gaudy Dutch wares, illustrating typical body, glaze and painting techniques from the c.1810 period.

Overall, this is a genuine antique Davenport decorative plate, firmly within the Gaudy Dutch tradition, showing honest signs of age and use but retaining the charm and character that make these early English ceramics enduringly desirable.
