This vibrant antique plate is an early 19th‑century example of English “Gaudy Dutch” decoration, attributed to the Davenport factory and dating to around 1805–1820. Measuring approximately 24 cm in diameter, it is a striking survival from the Regency period and displays the exuberant palette and freehand painting that make Gaudy wares so collectable.
The plate is formed in a shallow circular shape with a gently everted rim and a narrow foot ring to the underside. The body is a fine, relatively light earthenware/early porcelain body typical of Davenport’s transitional productions of the period, covered in a clear glaze that has matured to a soft, slightly blue‑tinted white. On the reverse, the base is unmarked apart from an incised or painted workman’s tally mark in the form of a simple cross, a characteristic feature of early Davenport utilitarian and decorative wares rather than a full printed factory mark, which was not yet in routine use at this date.
The decoration is entirely hand painted in a bold Gaudy Dutch style. The central reserves are dominated by large stylised flowers and foliage, executed in strong enamels of cobalt blue, iron red, rich chrome green, yellow and pink, enlivened with fine touches of gilding. Two dramatic dark blue “leaf” or “wing” motifs, edged in gilt, create dynamic diagonals across the plate, while a sunflower‑like yellow bloom occupies the centre. Around these are sprays of smaller flowers and scrolling leaves, filling the ground almost completely in the typically busy Gaudy manner. The painter has used spontaneous brushwork, with visible strokes and overlaps of colour, reinforcing the plate’s hand‑crafted character.
The rim is decorated continuously rather than in discrete panels, with trailing leaves, buds and tendrils in green, pink and red, interspersed with delicate gilt scrolls. The colour balance of intense cobalt and orange‑red against the white ground is particularly associated with the earliest phases of Gaudy Dutch production, when English factories, including Davenport, were adapting and exaggerating Imari and Continental floral influences for the home market.
Condition is consistent with advanced age and use and should be carefully noted. The front shows several rim chips and small losses, particularly visible at around the 8–9 o’clock and 11–12 o’clock positions in the images, as well as minor glaze nibbling along the edge. There are surface scratches to the enamels and gilding from over 200 years of handling, and some wear to the raised blue and gilt areas where the plate has been stacked or wiped. The reverse reveals a visible hairline or stress crack running from the rim into the cavetto, together with typical kiln blemishes such as pinholes and firing specks around the central spur mark. None of these issues detract from the plate’s strong decorative impact, but they do confirm its authenticity as an early 19th‑century piece rather than a later reproduction.
For collectors of Davenport or of Gaudy Dutch and Gaudy Welsh patterns more generally, this plate offers an appealing combination of early date, large size (approx. 24 cm), expressive hand painting and classic palette. It presents very well for display, whether wall‑hung or in a cabinet, where the dense floral design and flashes of gilt catch the light to excellent effect. The unmarked back and cross‑style potter’s mark are useful reference points for students of English ceramics interested in factory practices in the years just before printed backstamps became standard.
Overall, this is a decorative and historically engaging example of early Regency period Davenport, illustrating the colourful Gaudy Dutch style that brought a sense of exuberance and fashion to English tablewares in the early 1800s. Its imperfections testify to its long life and period manufacture, adding to the charm and authenticity that many collectors actively seek in genuine antique ceramics.
