This attractive antique plate is a genuine early 19th‑century Davenport example in the highly collectable “Gaudy Dutch” style, dating to around 1805–1820. Measuring approximately 24 cm in diameter, it displays all the hallmarks of early Staffordshire porcelain: a finely potted body, clear glaze and exuberant, hand‑painted enamels applied over a slightly off‑white ground.

The decoration is particularly bold and typical of Gaudy Dutch taste. The central area is freely painted with an asymmetric bouquet of stylised flowers, executed in vibrant cobalt blue, orange‑red, yellow, pink and green enamels. Dense, dark cobalt reserves form dramatic flower heads, further enriched with delicate gilt veining, while softer foliage and smaller buds are scattered across the surface to create a lively, almost naïve feel. Around the cavetto and rim runs an informal garland of green leaves punctuated by pink and red flower clusters, interspersed with fine squiggled brown lines that echo period Chinoiserie influences. The overall impression is of spontaneity and movement, entirely consistent with early Davenport work at the turn of the 19th century.

The reverse is plain and typical of early porcelain plates of this period, with a simple circular footrim and no printed factory mark, which is correct for Davenport pieces of c.1805–1820. The glaze shows a soft, slightly bluish white tone under the light, and the body rings clearly when lightly tapped, supporting an attribution to porcelain rather than earthenware. The footrim exhibits expected age‑related soiling and wear from nearly two centuries of use and display.

Condition is commensurate with age and should be carefully noted. The plate has several visible hairline cracks radiating from the centre towards the rim, clearly seen from the underside, forming a characteristic “spider” pattern. There are also small rim chips and frits in places, together with minor glaze losses and surface scratching to the front. Areas of the overglaze enamels show rubbing, especially to the gilt detailing on the dark cobalt petals and to some of the central floral elements. These flaws do not detract from the decorative impact when the plate is displayed, but they place the piece firmly in the category of an attractive, honest survivor rather than a pristine collector’s specimen.

Despite these faults, the plate remains a desirable example for collectors of early English porcelain and Gaudy Dutch wares. Its large 24 cm size and particularly rich palette make it well suited to wall or cabinet display, where its colourful surface reads strongly from a distance. It also offers an instructive reference piece, illustrating key stylistic traits of early Davenport: bold cobalt panels, freehand floral enamelling, unmarked underside and slightly irregular potting characteristic of this pioneering phase in the factory’s production.

This piece would complement a collection of early 19th‑century English porcelain, especially alongside Spode, New Hall or Sunderland Gaudy wares, and would appeal equally to decorators seeking an authentic period accent with strong visual impact. The plate is sold as an antique with visible age‑related wear and structural cracks, and is recommended for display rather than functional use.
