This attractive antique plate is an original 19th‑century example from the famous Davenport pottery, decorated in the desirable “Nectarine” pattern. Produced in Staffordshire, England, in the Victorian period, the plate displays the richly coloured and finely executed enamelling for which Davenport is well known.

The front of the plate features a broad, deep cobalt blue border, hand‑painted and then embellished with small gilt scroll flourishes. Around the inner edge runs a continuous wreath of nectarine blossom and foliage: large serrated leaves shaded from soft tan to dark umber, with fine veining picked out in darker enamel, frame clusters of white and pink flowers with delicate yellow and green centres. These floral sprays are enamel‑painted and then outlined with subtle gilded accents, creating a raised, almost jewelled effect typical of high‑quality mid‑Victorian decoration. The centre of the plate is reserved in a creamy, almost ivory‑toned ground, intentionally left plain to set off the busy border and to function as a serving area for dessert or fruit.

The rim is finished with a narrow gilt line, now showing some expected age‑related rubbing. The glaze overall retains an attractive, glossy surface, although light surface wear, minor utensil marks and a few small areas of discoloration in the well can be seen under close inspection, consistent with authentic 19th‑century use. There are no visible structural cracks or major chips in the images provided, and the edge looks sound, suggesting that the piece has been carefully used and well preserved.

The reverse of the plate carries a crisp underglaze blue cartouche enclosing the pattern name “NECTARINE” above the word “DAVENPORT,” framed by stylised leaves and blossom. Beneath this is an impressed British registration diamond with the numerals “6 74,” indicating a registration date in 1874, which firmly places this example in the later 19th century. A small underglaze blue painter’s mark and an impressed factory or shape mark are also present, together with a hand‑written inventory or pattern number in red, typical of Davenport quality control and pattern referencing.

The tape measure in the photographs shows a diameter of approximately 23 cm (about 9 inches), making this a classic dessert or side plate size, ideal for display in a cabinet or on a plate stand, or for use as part of a Victorian‑themed table setting. The refined white body, translucency and sharpness of moulded detail on the back are consistent with Davenport’s porcelain and fine china production of this era, rather than heavier earthenware.

For collectors, the “Nectarine” pattern is prized for its unusually rich palette of cobalt blue, warm biscuit‑coloured leaves and delicately modelled blossom sprays, all heightened with gilding. This plate would make an excellent addition to any collection of Davenport, Staffordshire, or Victorian floral ceramics, and it pairs well with other cobalt‑ground pieces from the same period. It also offers decorative appeal as a single statement item, bringing a touch of 19th‑century elegance to a modern interior.
