An English porcelain plate from a Regency Imari dessert service, c.1820, decorated in the "Old Japan" manner with radiating panels of underglaze cobalt blue overlaid with gilt scrollwork, alternating with reserves of iron-red chrysanthemum medallions and green foliage on white, all within a gilt edge. Approximate size: diameter 22cm.
The pattern is one of the classic English interpretations of Japanese Imari export porcelain that Derby, Coalport, Spode and other factories produced in quantity between about 1805 and 1830. This piece is unmarked, as most of these services are, and is attributed to an English factory on the basis of the paste, shape and palette rather than a factory mark.
