A good English brown salt-glazed stoneware tankard or mug, late 18th / early 19th century, c.1780-1820. The cylindrical body is dip-glazed in iron-brown over a pale buff ground in the classic two-tone manner, with a dense 'tiger-ware' orange-peel salt glaze, a single incised line below the everted rim and another above the base, and a hand-pulled reeded strap handle with a pinched terminal.
English (Nottingham / Derbyshire (Brampton) or London Fulham-Lambeth type), c.1780-1820. The hand-dipped wavy glaze line, the pulled reeded handle, the wiped gritty base and the absence of any later excise capacity stamp (WR/VR) or factory mark are all consistent with a Georgian date.
Condition: Repaired chip to the rim (see images); otherwise sound, with salt-glaze pitting and light surface wear consistent with age. Please study all photographs, which form part of the description.
Dimensions: approximately 14cm high.
From a private English collection of early stoneware and ceramics. Carefully packed and dispatched promptly, with combined postage offered on multiple purchases. UK and international postage available. Please message with any questions before bidding.
