An attractive antique marquetry inlaid wooden wall plaque, in the Sorrento or Indo-Persian taste, of irregular cartouche/shaped form.
The pictorial inlay is finely executed in contrasting hardwoods: a reclining figure — a sage, dervish or Sufi mystic — in flowing robes, drinking from a vessel beneath a flowering tree, with mosque/temple architecture and birds in the background. The composition evokes the classic Persian/Sufi imagery associated with the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and broader Orientalist romantic taste.
Various hardwoods used for the inlay, with brass hanging ring to verso. The reverse pencil-marked "RC 13" — likely an old collector or restorer's reference.
Late 19th/early 20th century. Attribution open to either Sorrento (Italian souvenir marquetry of the period, often executed with similar finesse), Persian Qajar-period khatam-kari work, or Anglo-Indian export production. The reclining-figure-with-wine motif is particularly characteristic of Persian/Sufi iconography.
CONDITION: Some scuffs to the wood, please see photographs. Structurally sound. The marquetry inlay is intact with no losses.
An evocative piece with strong narrative imagery — suits Orientalist, Aesthetic Movement, or simply atmospheric interiors.
Dimensions: Approximately 43 x 22 cm at widest points (irregular cartouche shape).
