A rare and decorative Japanese Meiji period polychrome pottery figure of a seated Luohan (Buddhist disciple/monk), the robed figure modelled with one arm raised and finely decorated in coloured enamels and gilding over a moulded body. An associated moulded vase is included with the lot.
The figure shows the expressive modelling and rich surface decoration typical of late 19th century Japanese export ceramics of this type, and is a substantial, eye-catching piece.
