An atmospheric small oil on canvas in the Dutch/Flemish genre tradition, depicting a tavern interior in which a grinning peasant in a dark hat chucks an elderly woman under the chin as she sits with a glass in hand. A stoneware jug and a barrel stand in the foreground, a shelf with a candlestick and bottles runs along the wall behind, and further figures are glimpsed in the shadows beyond.
The subject – the amorous peasant and the old woman – is a well-known comic motif of 17th-century Flemish painting associated with David Teniers the Younger and his circle, and this picture is painted in that manner. The handling is confident, with the faces, hands and still-life details picked out against a warm brown ground in the classic low-country tavern palette.
The painting is unsigned. The canvas shows a fine network of age craquelure across the whole surface, consistent with a picture of considerable age; we would suggest an 18th- or 19th-century date and offer it as Dutch/Flemish School, manner of Teniers.
It is presented in a wide gilt and gesso moulded frame, with a framer’s label on the reverse for Vereker Picture Framing, Mallow, Co. Cork, Ireland. The reverse shows an older keyed stretcher and is fitted with D-rings and cord ready to hang.
Size: approximately 36 x 31cm overall including the frame.
Condition: overall craquelure as described, stable to the eye; some surface grime and old varnish giving a warm tone; minor rubbing to the frame edges. Not examined under UV. Please see all photographs, including the close-ups of the surface, which form part of the description.
