This attractive pair of antique porcelain urn vases presents a striking combination of Regency-inspired form and Victorian taste for rich enamel colour. Each vase is of elegant amphora or classical urn shape, raised on a spreading gadrooned socle and a square plinth base. The bodies are finished in a vivid pink ground – sometimes referred to by collectors as a “Sevres pink” or “rose” ground – providing a luxurious backdrop for the finely executed gilding and white enamel ornament.
The vases are made in hard-paste porcelain and decorated with hand-painted gilt details throughout. Around the shoulder runs a delicate white enamel band reserved with tiny quatrefoils and linked flower-head motifs, edged above and below with intricate burnished-gold scrollwork in the neo-classical taste. The long flaring necks are vertically panelled with alternating gilt and white enamel stripes, drawing the eye upward to the gently everted gilt rims. To each side is a tall loop handle which continues the decorative scheme: the outer face is highlighted with a raised white enamel rib punctuated by a series of circular reserves, each circled in gold, while the inner curve is washed in soft cream and framed in gilding. The overall effect is of lightness and refinement, making the pair ideal for display on a mantel, console, or in a cabinet of porcelain.
The plinth bases repeat the pink ground with a single white-lined gilt panel to each side, visually anchoring the design. Undersides show the original metal fixing bolts typical of quality 19th-century cabinet vases, supporting an attribution to a good English or Continental factory of the mid-to-late 1800s. Although unmarked, the crisp modelling of the socles, the evenness of the glaze, and the character of the giltwork all point to an accomplished maker working in the high-Victorian or late-Regency revival style rather than a modern reproduction.
Condition is mixed and should be carefully noted. One vase remains in very good decorative order, with only minor age-related surface wear to the gilding and occasional tiny specks or firing marks commensurate with period manufacture. The second vase shows more substantial issues but still displays well from a front-on perspective. Both of its handles have been broken and re-stuck; old, discoloured restoration lines are visible along the outer curves and at the junction with the shoulder. In addition, there is a noticeable chip with associated loss and infill at the top of the socle where it meets the body, together with some rubbing and small losses to the gilt details on the base and foot. These condition points are accurately recorded in the photographs and priced accordingly, with the pair essentially valued as though purchasing the sound example alone.
Standing approximately 18cm tall, the vases are perfectly sized for use as decorative garnitures on a chimney piece, sideboard, or writing desk, either flanking a clock, mirror, or treasured artwork. While not recommended for holding water or heavy floral arrangements due to the historical repairs, they are ideal as purely ornamental cabinet pieces and will enhance any collection of pink ground porcelain, gilt urn vases, or 19th-century decorative ceramics. Their charming colour palette, fine gilded ornament and symmetrical twin-handled silhouettes lend a refined yet cheerful presence, making them a versatile accent in both period and contemporary interiors.
