A handsome late Victorian table lamp of classical form, the fluted and gadrooned brass urn with beaded borders and a band of floral guilloche, raised on a blue jasperware drum column decorated with white classical figures in arched reserves – a maiden with a wheatsheaf and grapes, a figure placing a wreath on a pedestal, and others – between borders of interlaced rings and laurel. The column sits on a domed and pierced brass foot and a circular grey marble base.

The jasper column is in the dark blue dip body with crisp white relief figures, strongly in the Wedgwood manner, of the type used for lamp and candlestick mounting in the later 19th century. The combination of ormolu-coloured brass, blue jasper and veined marble is a classic Neoclassical pairing.

The lamp was originally made as an oil lamp reservoir and has been converted to electricity with a bayonet-cap lamp holder, flex with inline switch and a UK three-pin plug. A plain cream fabric coolie shade is included.

Size: approximately 36cm high (base to top of fitting, excluding shade).

Condition: good overall with an attractive mellow patina to the brass and minor surface wear; the jasper column has no chips or cracks noted; light edge wear to the marble base. The wiring is an older conversion and has not been tested – it is sold as a decorative item and we recommend it is checked by a qualified electrician before use.
