An attractive Victorian gilt gesso wall mirror, with the good period foxing to the original mercury-glass mirror plate that collectors prize above the brightness of modern replacements. Honestly offered in need of restoration - missing two small pieces of the decorative banding to the frame.

Victorian gilt gesso mirrors of this kind, produced throughout the second half of the 19th century, were the standard above-mantel and overdoor mirror of the period. The frames are formed of moulded gesso (chalk and rabbit-skin glue paste) applied over a softwood carcass and gilded with gold leaf, producing the rich textured surface that is characteristic of the period. The mercury-tin amalgam mirror plates of the Victorian era develop, over time, the characteristic patchy "foxing" or sparkle which is now widely regarded as one of the most desirable features of an antique mirror.

This mirror measures 50 x 40cm. The original mirror plate has wonderful foxing - genuinely period and irreplaceable. The frame retains most of its original gilt and gesso ornamentation but is missing two small pieces of the decorative banding (clearly visible and honestly photographed). The mirror is offered as a candidate for restoration by a skilled gilder, or alternatively as-is for a buyer who values the patina of age over perfection.

Priced accordingly. A characterful piece for a period interior, for restoration, or for use as-is in a more relaxed setting. UK tracked delivery available; collection from Nottingham welcome.
