Antique Victorian Watercolour York Minster & City Walls Framed

A good quality Victorian watercolour depicting York Minster, its twin western towers rising behind one of the city's medieval bars and barbican, with the ancient walls, rooftops and chimney stacks of the city below and a wooded foreground.

The painting is accomplished and atmospheric, with careful handling of the Minster's gothic stonework, the weathered masonry of the gateway with its heraldic shields, and a soft cloud-filled sky. Probably second half of the 19th century.

Presented in a gilt glazed frame with a cream mount and red ruled lines, in good condition with some light age toning and spotting to the margins consistent with age. The frame measures approximately 51 x 42 cm. No signature has been found; the buyer may wish to examine the work out of the frame.
