This attractive antique plate is an excellent example of late 19th‑century English tableware by the renowned firm W.T. Copeland & Sons of Stoke‑on‑Trent. Measuring approximately 21 cm in diameter, it features a gently scalloped rim with a molded, shell‑like undulation that catches the light and frames the decoration beautifully. The edge is finished with a fine hand‑applied gilt line, adding a refined highlight and helping date the piece to the Victorian era, when such gilded borders were popular on Copeland’s better quality wares.

The central decoration is a naturalistic botanical design often referred to by collectors as a “vines” pattern. A sinuous brown vine meanders across the ivory‑toned ground, sprouting foliage in varying stages: fresh green leaves, older leaves turning to warm chestnut brown, and twining tendrils that evoke movement and growth. Interspersed along the vine are delicately painted flowers, including white blossoms and a sprig of yellow flowers rendered in clear overglaze enamels. The painting shows the careful brushwork and subtle shading characteristic of Copeland’s hand‑finished designs from this period, rather than the flatter look of later transfer prints with minimal hand colouring.

The underside bears a clear printed factory mark reading “W.T. COPELAND & SONS” encircling a crown, with “STOKE UPON TRENT” on the surrounding ribbon. This backstamp is consistent with marks used by the Copeland factory in the late 19th century, following their succession to the famous Spode enterprise. The quality of the body and glaze, together with the mark, indicate a fine earthenware rather than porcelain: the plate has a slightly warm, creamy tone and the typical tiny specks and minor firing irregularities associated with Victorian earthenware production, all visible on close inspection of the back.

The condition is described as good, and the images support this assessment. The glaze retains an attractive soft sheen, and the gilt rim is largely intact with only light wear from age and use. The painted vine and flowers are still bright and legible, with no significant loss to the enamels. No obvious cracks or structural damage are visible; any minor age‑related surface marks, slight utensil traces, or tiny manufacturing flaws are entirely typical and do not detract from the piece’s display value. Collectors of Copeland and Spode will appreciate the combination of a molded, scalloped form with such a fresh, asymmetrical botanical design, which bridges the earlier Regency taste for floral decoration and the later Victorian interest in realistic nature studies.

This 21 cm plate is suitable for use as a dessert or side plate, but it also makes an appealing decorative accent when displayed on a plate stand or wall hanger. Its relatively compact size allows it to sit comfortably in a cabinet arrangement with other floral or botanical wares, especially those in the Aesthetic or naturalistic styles of the late 19th century. For interior styling, it pairs well with other cream‑ground pieces, green glass, or brass accessories that echo the warm gilded edge. For collectors, it offers a well‑marked and representative example of W.T. Copeland & Sons’ output, ideal either as a stand‑alone decorative object or as part of a broader Copeland or English earthenware service.

Overall, this W.T. Copeland “vines” pattern scalloped plate combines an elegant Victorian form, appealing hand‑painted decoration, and a clear factory mark, making it a desirable item for those who appreciate antique English ceramics, floral tablewares, or the history of the Copeland and Spode potteries.
