This listing is for an attractive antique watercolour study of a golden pheasant, presented in a period gilt frame. Although your collection focuses on ceramics and porcelain, works such as this were frequently hung in the same interiors as fine china cabinets, and the brilliant plumage of the bird closely echoes the palette used on 19th‑century hand‑painted porcelain services.

The image shows a single golden pheasant perched on a branch, turned in profile with its exceptionally long tail feathers sweeping down the sheet. The artist has used a combination of transparent watercolour and small touches of opaque bodycolour, together with delicate gilded accents, to evoke the iridescent quality of the bird’s plumage. The neck and shoulder are worked in greens and turquoise with scattered gold strokes, the wing shows deep cobalt blue and bright yellow sections, and the long tail is rendered in warm browns and russets with fine feather detailing. The branch beneath the bird’s feet is painted in mottled greens and browns, typical of late‑Victorian and early‑Edwardian natural history illustration.

From the photographs, the paper appears to be a reasonably stiff, lightly textured wove sheet, now lightly toned with age. The scattered brown specks visible across the background are consistent with minor foxing, which is common in watercolours of this period and, while worth monitoring, does not significantly detract from the image. The sheet is mounted close to the image edge within a broad gilt mount that matches the outer frame.

The frame itself is a timber section with a gilded finish, having a simple inner moulding and a slightly more decorative, small raised edge to the outside. The reverse shows an old card backing board fixed with small panel pins and later parcel‑tape reinforcement around the edges, together with a traditional hanging wire. The construction of the frame, the ageing to the cardboard, and the character of the watercolour suggest a likely late 19th‑century to early 20th‑century date, approximately circa 1880–1910. The piece therefore aligns broadly with your suggestion of 19th century, though on photographic evidence alone it is safer to describe it as “late 19th to early 20th century.”

The overall framed size, as seen against the tape measure, is approximately 31 cm by 41 cm, making this a moderately sized wall piece that would display well either as a single focal point or within a grouping of bird or natural history subjects. Condition appears good overall for the age: the glass is intact, the frame shows only minor rubbing and small losses to the gilding on the edges, and the image retains strong colour with no obvious water staining or tears. Conservation‑minded buyers might in future consider professional re‑mounting with acid‑free materials and the replacement of the backing board, as this would help stabilise the paper and reduce the risk of further foxing.

This charming golden pheasant watercolour would appeal to collectors of antique bird studies, Orientalist‑influenced decorative art, and those seeking complementary wall pieces for rooms furnished with 19th‑century ceramics and porcelain. Its vibrant yet refined palette makes it particularly effective alongside gilded picture frames, gilt‑edged plates, and richly coloured china, offering a cohesive period aesthetic.
