This attractive antique Wedgwood jasperware trophy vase presents a refined example of the firm’s celebrated neo‑classical style, produced in an appealing sage green ground with crisp white relief decoration. Standing approximately 20cm high, the vase is of elegant amphora form, raised on a spreading circular foot and surmounted by a slightly flared collar rim. Twin looped side handles complete the classic trophy silhouette, making it an ideal display piece for collectors of English jasperware and Georgian‑revival ceramics.
The body is decorated with finely modelled white jasper reliefs depicting draped classical figures, trees and attributes arranged in continuous friezes around the vase. The scenes include contemplative maidens beside altars and columns, figures holding musical instruments or scrolls, and urns and foliage, all typical of Wedgwood’s late 18th‑ and 19th‑century taste for Greco‑Roman motifs. The relief work is sharply detailed, with particularly good articulation in the folds of the drapery and the foliage of the trees, standing out crisply against the smooth matt green ground.
A narrow band of laurel leaf and berry ornament encircles the shoulder of the vase, emphasising its classical lineage and visually separating the figural frieze below from the ribbons and trophies that hang between the handles above. Around the foot, applied leaf terminals rise to meet stylised bud motifs, providing a strong visual base and echoing the laurel banding above. This balanced scheme of ornament underlines Wedgwood’s mastery of proportion and restraint in jasperware design.
The vase bears impressed Wedgwood and ENGLAND marks to the underside, confirming production by the renowned Staffordshire factory. The presence of the “ENGLAND” country of origin stamp indicates manufacture from the late 19th century onwards, during the period when Wedgwood continued to develop and re‑issue classical designs for an international market. The typical dry, unglazed surface and the distinctive pale green tone correspond to the company’s standard jasperware body of this era, prized for its ability to take sharp applied reliefs.
Condition is generally good for an antique decorative piece of this type and age, with the main relief decoration remaining crisp and undamaged and the body free from structural cracks. There has, however, been an earlier staple repair to one handle, visible as small filled holes and discolouration around the attachment point. This historic repair, executed using traditional metal staples, is now part of the object’s story and will interest collectors who appreciate evidence of period conservation techniques. Aside from this old restoration and the expected light surface wear from handling and display, the vase presents well and displays handsomely from all angles.
With its harmonious proportions, finely executed neo‑classical ornament and desirable green and white colourway, this Wedgwood jasperware trophy vase would make a strong addition to any collection of Wedgwood, English neo‑classical ceramics or 19th‑century decorative arts. It is equally suitable as a focal point on a mantel, bookshelf or in a cabinet display, where the sculptural quality of the applied figures and the subdued elegance of the jasper body can be properly appreciated.
