This attractive antique plate is an Ashworth Brothers “Ironside” example, decorated in a bold polychrome oriental or Chinoiserie style. Measuring approximately 25 cm in diameter, it offers a generous display surface that highlights the richly coloured transfer and hand‑enamelled decoration. The plate has a slightly dished profile with a raised rim and a neatly turned foot ring to the underside.

The main decoration is arranged in panels to the centre, featuring stylised oriental garden and riverside scenes. Pagoda roofs, pavilions, trees and distant buildings are rendered in a warm palette of iron‑red, soft coral, green and gilt, all set against a clear white ground. These framed scenes echo popular 19th‑century English interpretations of Far Eastern export porcelain, reflecting the fascination with Chinese and Japanese motifs that influenced Staffordshire design through the Victorian period.

A wide band encircles the central reserves, filled with scrolling foliage and arabesque devices printed in outline and then enlivened with coloured enamels. The outer rim is particularly striking: deep bottle green and brick red panels are overlaid with gilt latticework, stylised chrysanthemum and peony blossoms, and curling acanthus scrolls, creating a strong visual contrast that draws the eye to the edge of the piece. The colour palette and layout are characteristic of Ashworth’s late 19th‑century interpretations of earlier Mason’s Ironstone patterns, often marketed as “oriental” or “Japan” designs.

The reverse of the plate carries the Ashworth Brothers backstamp in puce, incorporating a crown above a ribbon cartouche. Within and around the ribbon can be read the Ashworth name and related wording (partly obscured in places), consistent with marks used from the mid‑ to late‑19th century at the Broad Street works in Hanley, Staffordshire. In addition to the printed mark, there is an impressed mark near the rim, along with typical kiln grit speckling to the glaze, all of which are normal production features for period Ashworth pieces. These marks help to authenticate the plate as an original antique rather than a modern reproduction.

The body is a fine, dense ironstone‑type ceramic with a clear, slightly glossy glaze. Ashworth acquired the Mason’s Ironstone patterns and moulds in the 1860s and continued to produce heavy, durable tablewares marketed for their strength – hence the “ironstone” or “ironside” association. This plate exemplifies that tradition: it has a substantial feel in the hand while still offering a refined, crisp moulded edge suitable for display or use.

Condition, as observed, appears good for age. The painted and transfer decoration retains strong colour with only light surface wear commensurate with careful use. The rim shows minor age‑related rubbing to the gilding, and the back has small firing specks and a little discolouration around the foot ring, typical of 19th‑century firing and years of handling. No obvious cracks or significant chips are visible in the images, suggesting the plate has been well preserved.

This Ashworth Bros Ironside oriental plate would make an excellent addition to a collection of Mason’s or Ashworth ironstone, Victorian Chinoiserie tableware, or 19th‑century transfer‑printed ceramics. Its 25 cm size makes it ideal for wall display, use as a cabinet plate, or as a striking stand for a teapot or centrepiece on an antique dining table. The richly coloured pattern and clear manufacturer’s mark also make it a useful reference example for collectors studying the evolution of Ashworth’s Mason‑derived designs.
