This vibrant 19th‑century Copeland Spode dessert plate displays the celebrated “Grapes & Vines” polychrome pattern, one of the most sought‑after Victorian designs. Produced circa 1878–1880, it represents the later Copeland version of Spode’s original pattern no. 3057, first introduced around 1830. Measuring approximately 8.5 inches in diameter, the plate is perfectly sized for serving cheese, fruit, or an elegant final course, while also being striking enough to stand alone as a decorative accent.

The front of the plate is richly transfer‑printed and hand‑coloured in a lavish palette typical of high Victorian taste. Clusters of ripe grapes in shades of deep purple and fresh green cascade across the surface, intertwined with scrolling tendrils and textured vines. Large vine leaves in jewel‑like tones of teal, chartreuse, russet, and amethyst overlap in an almost tapestry‑like effect. The colours are strong and clear, with subtle shading that adds depth and naturalism to the botanical forms. Against the warm off‑white ground, the design has remarkable visual impact, making it especially effective for wall display or in a cabinet.

The rim is attractively shaped with a crisply moulded, scalloped edge that lends a refined, almost lace‑like outline to the plate. This undulating edge catches the light and frames the dense central decoration, giving balance to what is otherwise a richly packed pattern. The reverse is plain glazed, showing the characteristic fine speckling of the body and a clean, slightly creamy tone consistent with late 19th‑century English earthenware.

On the underside, the impressed “COPELAND” mark, together with additional date and workman’s marks, confirms manufacture by W.T. Copeland & Sons at Stoke‑on‑Trent. This dating aligns with the known production period of the Copeland revival of the Spode Grapes & Vines design in the late 1870s. The impressed mark and moulded footrim indicate quality factory production rather than a later reproduction.

This piece is an excellent example for collectors of Spode and Copeland wares, transfer‑printed ceramics, or Victorian botanical designs. The polychrome Grapes & Vines pattern is prized not only for its rarity but also for how effectively it harmonises with both traditional and contemporary interiors. In a dining setting, it provides a dramatic backdrop for seasonal fruit, cheese boards, or individual desserts; in a decorative context, it adds a burst of colour and historic character when grouped with other 19th‑century plates or hung as a single focal point.

Surviving examples of this pattern in such vibrant condition are increasingly hard to find. This plate combines an iconic Copeland Spode design, desirable period dating, and strong visual presence, making it a distinguished addition to any serious collection of antique English ceramics or an ideal statement piece for an interior that values colour, craftsmanship, and historical charm.
