Egyptian Alabaster Hand Carved Small Vessel Urn Vase 11.5cm

A small hand-carved Egyptian alabaster vessel of urn form, in finely banded translucent calcite displaying the honey, cream and amber tones typical of fine Egyptian alabaster. The smaller companion piece to a larger example also listed in this account.

Egyptian alabaster - calcium-carbonate calcite - has been quarried from the wadis of Middle Egypt since Pharaonic times and was the material of choice for the canopic jars, ointment containers and ceremonial vessels of the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms. The hand-carving tradition continues today in the workshops around Luxor, where stone is shaped on simple lathes and finished by hand exactly as it has been for thousands of years.

This vessel measures 11.5cm in height with a slightly flared rim, tapering shouldered body and turned foot. The internal banding of the stone is best seen against light, when the natural translucency becomes apparent. Condition is good - see photographs for full detail.
