Exquisite Enoch Wood Staffordshire Pearlware Bust – Reverend John Wesley, c.19th Century
This distinguished Staffordshire pearlware bust by renowned potter Enoch Wood of Burslem presents a finely modelled portrait of Reverend John Wesley, M.A., the influential 18th-century preacher and founder of Methodism. A highly desirable piece for collectors of antique English pottery, religious portraiture, and Staffordshire figures, it combines historical significance with refined decorative appeal.
The bust depicts Wesley’s head and shoulders, gracefully modelled and mounted on a classical plinth base. It is decorated fully “in the round”, with careful attention to both front and reverse, allowing it to display beautifully from any angle. This three-dimensional presentation makes it especially suitable for placement on a mantelpiece, console table, or within a glazed cabinet where it can be appreciated all around.
To the reverse is a circular moulded plaque bearing the full inscription:
“THE REV.D JOHN WESLEY. M.A. DIED MAR 2. 1791. AGED 88. ENOCH WOOD SCULP BURSLEM.”
This inscription not only identifies the sitter and his dates, but also proudly records the sculptor and manufacturer, Enoch Wood, one of the leading Staffordshire potters of his time. The presence of this plaque enhances both the authenticity and collectible value of the piece, making it a particularly attractive example for serious collectors of Enoch Wood pottery and Wesleyana.
