Frédéric Régamey (1849–1925) – Attributed – Marching Soldiers

An interesting late 19th/early 20th-century French ink and watercolour depicting a group of marching soldiers, attributed to the French artist, illustrator and printmaker Frédéric Régamey (1849–1925).

The work is executed in ink and watercolour on paper and measures approximately 26 × 34 cm. It is presented in a 70 x 63 cm glazed gilt frame.

Of particular interest is the reverse, which retains historic labels and inscriptions. The backing bears a Maison Souty, 33 Rue Vanneau, Paris label. Maison Souty is a documented Parisian firm associated with framing, gilding and the supply of artists’ materials and frames. The work also bears handwritten inscriptions to the reverse, including what appears to read “Regamey”.

The auction house catalogued the work as “Attributed to Frédéric Regamey (1849–1925)” and recorded provenance as The Leahy and Stevens Families, thence by descent.

Régamey was a French artist known for subjects including military scenes, sport and contemporary life. His work is represented in major institutional collections, including the Rijksmuseum.
