A late 19th to early 20th century Japanese octagonal hand-painted plate, decorated in the traditional palette with figural and floral subjects. Meiji or early Taisho period, circa 1900.
The Meiji period (1868-1912) saw an explosion of Japanese porcelain production aimed at the export market, with workshops in Arita, Kutani, Seto and elsewhere producing wares specifically tailored to Western tastes. Octagonal plates of this form were a particular speciality of the period, often hand-painted in saturated enamels with figures, landscapes or flora and fauna.
This plate measures approximately 21cm across the widest points (approximately 6.75 inches). It has been professionally repaired and is offered honestly with this disclosed; please review the photographs carefully to assess the repair and the overall display condition before bidding. As a wall piece or cabinet display the plate presents well; it is not suitable for table use.
Priced accordingly to reflect the condition. A decorative and characterful piece for the collector unwilling to pay the premium for perfect examples. UK tracked delivery; collection from Nottingham welcome.
