The Kingdome of England by John Speed, the famous carte-a-figures map of England and Wales, from the second plate engraved by Abraham Goos of Amsterdam, with the imprint Abraham Goos Amstelodamensis sculpsit Anno 1646 at lower left.

The map is flanked by costumed figures of a Nobleman, Gentleman, Citizen and Countryman with their wives, with a large table of the shires, cities, bishoprics and market towns, the royal arms, galleons and sea monsters. Hand coloured.

Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine (1612) was the first atlas of the British Isles; the Hondius plate of England wore out and was replaced by this Goos plate, dated 1646 and used in the later editions.

Framed behind glass in a wooden frame with a cream mount. Backboard with a label of The Newton Gallery, Newton Abbot, Devon titled 'Map of England'. Overall size approx 57 x 45 cm.

Printed on laid paper. Condition: toned with spotting and some staining, as the photographs show; colour attractive. The map has been examined in its frame, which has not been opened; please examine every photograph, which form part of the description. Sold as found.
