John Speed's map of Worcestershire, from The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, the first printed atlas of the British Isles. The plate is engraved Anno Domini 1610, Jodocus Hondius, and carries the imprint stating it was described by Christopher Saxton, augmented and published by John Speed, and sold in Pope's Head Alley by John Sudbury and George Humble.
One of Speed's most decorative maps, it includes an inset plan of the city of Worcester, a vignette of the Battle of Evesham with an account of the battle in which Simon de Montfort was killed, the coats of arms of the Earls of Worcester, and a large dated compass-rose cartouche, all in bright hand colour.
This example has English text on the reverse describing the county, with the list of Worcestershire's hundreds, and is framed with glass to both sides so the text can be seen.
Condition: centre fold as issued and general toning consistent with age. Please view all photographs, which form part of the description.
Framed size approx. 58 x 46 cm.
