A large and impressive Japanese Imari temple/ginger jar and cover, Meiji period, c.1880-1910, attributed to the Fukagawa works on the basis of the distinctive blue Mt Fuji-style mark to the interior of the base.
The jar is of substantial baluster form, surmounted by a pomegranate-form finial to the domed cover. The decoration is densely worked: an all-over peony and trailing foliate pattern on an underglaze blue ground, enriched with iron-red and gilt highlights and reserved with gilt roundels enclosing further peonies. The complexity and density of the brocade-style pattern is characteristic of the better Meiji-period Fukagawa/Koransha output.
CONDITION DISCLOSURE: There is a notable chip/hole to the body — please refer carefully to the close-up photograph. The cover is in good condition. The piece is structurally sound and displays very well from most angles; the damage is concentrated to one area and can be turned to the wall. The damage has been honestly disclosed and the price reflects this.
The Fukagawa works (founded 1875) and the related Koransha works were the premier Arita producers of the Meiji period, supplying many of the great international exhibitions of the late 19th century. Pieces by Fukagawa in undamaged condition routinely make £400-1,000+ at auction; this piece is offered at a substantial discount on account of the body damage.
