Discover the timeless elegance of this late 18th to early 19th century Wedgwood blue Jasperware plaque, exquisitely modelled with a classical cherub in relief. This fine antique medallion beautifully represents Wedgwood’s most iconic period, when neoclassical design, refined craftsmanship and exceptional material quality defined the very best in English ceramics.

Rendered in Wedgwood’s signature matte blue Jasperware with crisp white relief, the plaque features a delicately sculpted cherub framed within a circular border. The design is both charming and sophisticated, making it a perfect example of the balance between artistry and restraint that made Wedgwood world‑famous. Measuring approximately 9cm in diameter, it is an ideal size for display in a cabinet, small frame, or as part of a curated Jasperware collection.

This piece dates to the late 18th or early 19th century, a period highly prized by collectors for the purity of the Jasper body and the finesse of the applied decoration. The cherub motif draws on classical and mythological themes, a hallmark of Georgian taste and a key reason Wedgwood Jasperware became synonymous with luxury and refinement in Europe’s grand houses.

Key Features:

  • Authentic late 18th / early 19th century Wedgwood Jasperware plaque
  • Classic blue Jasper body with white relief decoration
  • Charming cherub design in fine neoclassical style
  • Circular medallion form, approx. 9cm in diameter
  • Ideal for framing, cabinet display, or as part of a Jasperware collection
  • Highly decorative and collectible Georgian / early 19th century ceramic

Condition:

This antique plaque presents beautifully from the front, with the relief decoration remaining crisp and attractive. There are some chips to the rear edges, consistent with age and handling over more than two centuries; these are not visible when the piece is viewed from the front or displayed flat or framed. Overall, the front face is in good antique condition and displays very well.

Please refer to the photographs as they form an important part of the description. As with all genuine period Jasperware, minor age-related wear should be expected and is part of the charm and authenticity of the piece.

Why Collect Wedgwood Jasperware?

Wedgwood Jasperware is one of the most recognisable and desirable types of fine English pottery. Developed in the 18th century by Josiah Wedgwood, Jasperware is renowned for its smooth, unglazed stoneware body and its beautiful palette of colours, of which blue is the most iconic. The applied white reliefs, often depicting classical figures, cherubs, and mythological scenes, reflect the neoclassical taste that defined the Georgian era.

Collectors prize early Jasperware for its artistry, historical significance and enduring decorative appeal. Pieces from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such as this cherub plaque, are especially sought after, both as stand‑alone works of art and as part of larger collections of fine English ceramics, Georgian antiques, and neoclassical decorative arts.
