This attractive vintage serving bowl is an excellent example of Mason’s ironstone in the popular “Vista” pattern, here produced in the less common purple colourway with richly polychrome over‑enamelling. Made in England and clearly backstamped “MASON’S VISTA ENGLAND PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA”, it dates from the mid‑20th century and showcases the firm’s long tradition of durable yet decorative tablewares.

The bowl has an unusual elongated octagonal outline with soft angular corners and gently flared rim, giving it a distinctive architectural presence on the table. Measuring approximately 26 cm (about 10¼ inches) across the widest points and 19 cm (about 7½ inches) from side to side, it is a versatile medium serving size, ideal for vegetables, side dishes, salads or fruit. The interior is moderately deep with sloping sides, and the piece stands on a flat, stepped foot that provides good stability.

The decoration is a classic romantic landscape, typical of Mason’s Vista series. At the centre, a finely printed purple scene depicts an elegant castle or great house set within parkland, with a river or ornamental lake in the foreground and figures in 18th‑century dress strolling along a path. The architectural details, trees and foreground group are crisply rendered, then highlighted with hand‑applied enamels in rich yellow, soft brown and vivid green. These over‑glaze colours enliven the monochrome print and give the design considerable depth.

A wide border encircles the scene, consisting of intertwined vine leaves, tendrils and blossoms. The ground is a deep mulberry‑purple, over which large grape leaves are picked out in lilac and green, while the flowers are painted in warm yellow and russet tones. A fine lace‑like edge and tiny repeating motifs frame the rim, showing the precision of the transfer work. The exterior sides repeat sections of the vine border so that the bowl is decorative from every angle when in use or on display.

The body is Mason’s characteristic ironstone china, a robust, high‑fired ceramic developed to offer the look of porcelain with greater toughness for everyday service. The glaze has developed an attractive network of age‑related crazing, visible in the close‑up photographs, which is typical of vintage ironstone and adds to the piece’s antique character. The colours remain strong and the print still sharp, indicating careful use over the years.

The impressed and printed marks to the base confirm its authenticity as Mason’s Vista, and the elongated form places it within the range of shaped serving pieces produced to complement the standard round plates. Collectors will appreciate the combination of the purple colourway, the unusual octagonal outline and the scenic central reserve, while interior decorators will find it a striking accent for a country house, traditional or eclectic setting.

Whether used as a functional serving dish, a fruit or display bowl on a sideboard, or a focal piece within a larger Mason’s Vista collection, this vintage ironstone bowl offers both decorative charm and historical interest. Its hard‑wearing ironstone body makes it suitable for continued gentle use, while the detailed romantic landscape and richly coloured vine border provide a vivid glimpse into the enduring appeal of English transfer‑printed ceramics.
