Mercator Hondius Atlas Minor Marche Ancona Spoleto Antique Map c1607 Coloured

An early 17th-century miniature copper-engraved map of the Marche and the Duchy of Spoleto in central Italy, from the Mercator-Hondius Atlas Minor, with the title cartouche MARCHA ANCONITANA cum SPOLETANO DUCATU.

The Atlas Minor was Jodocus Hondius's pocket-sized version of Mercator's great atlas, first published in Amsterdam in 1607. The map shows Ancona and the Adriatic coast (Golfo di Venetia), with hand colouring to the regional boundaries and a decorative strapwork cartouche.

Provenance: ex The Carson Clark Gallery, Scotland's Map Heritage Centre, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, whose label to the reverse reads "Mercator/Hondius, Janssen - Atlas Minor, Amsterdam 1607", together with the gallery's "Guaranteed to be an original map over 100 years old" label.

Size: mount 32 x 29 cm. Supplied in a card mount, ready to frame.

Condition: toning consistent with age.
