This striking mid 20th century Chinese export butterfly-shaped tray is a fine example of colourful cloisonné-style enamel work produced for the Western market. Cast in the stylised form of an outspread butterfly, the tray measures approximately 11 cm in height and 16 cm in length, giving it a pleasingly compact, jewel-like presence that works beautifully as a decorative accent or functional small dish.
The upper surface is richly enamelled with a large, central butterfly motif, executed in vivid tones of cobalt and lapis blue, soft green, white, red and yellow. The wings are rendered with great attention to detail: layered feathering, concentric ‘eye’ spots and linear embellishments all contribute to a sense of movement and life. The insect’s segmented body is picked out in warm, metallic tones, contrasting with the cool blues of the wings. A narrow border of fine black foliate scrollwork runs around the wing edges, framed by a metal rim that follows the undulating silhouette of the butterfly.
The enamel decoration has the slightly raised, glassy surface associated with kiln-fired enamel on a metal ground, rather than a ceramic glaze. The outlines of the design are defined by fine metal cloisons which both structure the imagery and hold separate pools of colour, a technique strongly associated with Chinese cloisonné wares of the 20th century. The colour palette – particularly the strong blues and light celadon green ground – is typical of mid-century Chinese export taste, designed to appeal to both Asian and Western buyers.
The reverse of the tray is finished in an off‑white enamel, with an inset oval recess to help the piece sit steadily on a flat surface. The back shows a small area of enamel loss, exposing the underlying metal core, as well as minor specks, firing marks and light surface wear consistent with age and normal use. The front enamelling, however, remains in good overall condition with bright, unfaded colours and no major chips or cracks visible in the images. The metal rim shows slight toning and patination, adding to the piece’s vintage character.
Dating to the mid 20th century, this tray represents the flourishing trade in Chinese decorative enamels in the decades following the Second World War, when such butterfly, fish and flower-form dishes were popular as ashtrays, trinket trays or small sweet dishes. Today it is more often used purely decoratively – ideal for holding jewellery, keys or other small items, or displayed on a stand to showcase the bold butterfly design.
Collectors will appreciate the quality of the enamelling, the crispness of the wing pattern and the attractive, well-balanced proportions. The butterfly, a traditional Chinese symbol of joy, love and longevity, lends additional auspicious meaning to the piece, making it a thoughtful gift as well as a charming addition to any collection of Chinese export enamel or mid-century decorative arts.
