A pair of antique Wedgwood Portland Blue Jasperware tapering vases, late 19th/early 20th century, with applied white sprigged decoration to a classic dark blue ground.
Each vase features a continuous frieze of winged cherubs/cupids carrying floral swags around the lower body, beneath a band of laurel leaves at the neck — a quintessential neoclassical composition executed in Wedgwood's signature jasperware technique. Both vases are impressed WEDGWOOD to the bases together with workmen's marks.
CONDITION DISCLOSURE: One vase is in excellent original condition. The second vase has a significant crack to the rim/neck, visible both inside and out — please refer carefully to the close-up photographs. The first vase is structurally sound and would display perfectly alone; the cracked vase is sold as is, suitable as a 'spares or repair' companion or for display where the rim damage can be turned away.
Sold as a pair, one a/f. Price reflects the damage to the second vase.
Wedgwood Portland Blue with cherub friezes are perennially collectable. Cupids-and-swags pieces are amongst the most popular Wedgwood Jasperware compositions.
Dimensions: Each vase approximately 19 cm tall.
