A handsome pair of English porcelain dessert plates attributed to Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester, circa 1820-1830, hand-painted in the Regency taste with a finely gilded border and central reserves. Unmarked, as is often the case with this factory in this period; attribution rests on body, glaze, palette and the characteristic gilding.
The Worcester porcelain works went through a succession of partnerships in the early 19th century: Flight & Barr (1792-1804), Barr, Flight & Barr (1804-1813) and finally Flight, Barr & Barr (1813-1840), before amalgamating with the rival Chamberlains factory in 1840 to form what would eventually become the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company. Throughout this period Flight, Barr & Barr held royal warrants and produced porcelain of the highest quality, with particularly accomplished gilding for which the factory remains celebrated. Comparable patterns and gilding styles are illustrated in Henry Sandon's Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain 1783-1840 (Antique Collectors' Club).
Each plate measures approximately 17cm in diameter. The decoration is of high quality with crisp gilding, well-controlled enamels and a bright white body characteristic of FBB. Both plates have small hairlines as commonly seen in tea and dessert ware of this period and are honestly described and photographed. Display condition is very good.
An attractive pair from a fine Regency dessert service, ideal for the collector of early English porcelain or for use as cabinet pieces. UK tracked delivery; collection from Nottingham welcome.
