A handsome pair of Victorian English porcelain vases, hand-painted with floral and gilt decoration in the high Victorian taste. Bearing a painted pattern number to the base; attributed on the basis of the pattern numbering system and the painting style to Samuel Alcock & Co. of Burslem, circa 1835-1850.
Samuel Alcock & Co., founded around 1828 and active until the firm's failure in 1859, was one of the foremost Staffordshire porcelain manufacturers of the early Victorian period. The factory produced a vast range of decorative porcelain - figures, vases, jugs and ornamental ware - in the prevailing Rococo Revival taste, with elaborate flower-encrusted and hand-painted decoration of high quality. Alcock used a distinctive system of four-digit red painted pattern numbers (e.g. 5093, 4628 etc.) on the bases of decorative pieces; pieces are otherwise generally unmarked.
Each vase stands 24cm in height, of baluster form with applied scrolling handles and finely hand-painted floral reserves against a coloured ground with gilt embellishment throughout. Both vases have professional restorations to the neck rim - a common condition issue with vases of this type and honestly disclosed below. Display condition is very good and the pair present strongly as a matched pair. Please review all photographs carefully for the precise location of the restorations.
An attractive pair from one of the most accomplished Staffordshire factories of the Victorian period, priced to reflect the restoration. Particularly nice as a mantel pair. UK tracked delivery; collection from Nottingham welcome.
