This striking antique plate is an excellent example of Ashworth ironstone from the later 19th century, notable for its dramatic black ground and richly enamelled floral decoration. Ashworth, successors to Mason’s at the famous Lane Delph works in Staffordshire, were well known for producing robust ironstone tablewares with bold, colourful patterns, and this dinner plate demonstrates those qualities particularly well.

The wide rim is painted in a deep, almost inky black that forms a powerful contrast to the crisp white of the ironstone body. Set against this dark field is a continuous border of large, stylised flowers and foliage executed in opaque overglaze enamels. The blossoms, in shades of white with fine red and brown detailing, are accentuated with raised, almost tube-lined enamelling that gives the decoration a subtle relief when seen in raking light. Between the flowers, shaded green and yellow leaves and scrolling gilt foliage provide additional richness and depth. Small circular medallions at the centre of several blooms are picked out in a warm brown/black with a delicate gilt device, adding a refined neoclassical touch.

The well of the plate is left plain, a characteristic feature of many mid- to late‑Victorian ironstone dinner services, allowing food to be clearly presented while the patterned rim provides the visual drama. The underside carries the printed Ashworth mark with the royal arms, consistent with production after Ashworth took over the Mason’s works (c.1860 onwards). Hand‑painted red pattern and workman’s numbers are also visible, typical of Ashworth’s workshop practice and helpful for attributing the design within their pattern books.

Measuring approximately 26 cm in diameter, this is a full dinner‑size plate rather than a side or dessert plate, making it especially desirable for collectors attempting to re‑create or extend a period service. The images indicate the piece is in good antique condition: the glaze retains a pleasing gloss, and the decoration appears intact with only the light wear expected from careful use over more than a century. No obvious cracks or major chips are visible in the photographs, though, as with all antique ceramics, very minor surface marks, slight rubbing to the gilt, or small firing specks may be present and are part of its authentic character.

From a decorative standpoint, the combination of a black enamel ground, strong raised enamels and gilded scrolling foliage is comparatively uncommon on Ashworth ironstone and aligns with patterns that drew inspiration from earlier Mason’s Imari and “Japan” designs, yet with a more Victorian floral naturalism. The palette works particularly well in both traditional and contemporary interiors: the dark border reads almost as a frame, allowing the plate to be hung as wall art, displayed in a dresser or cabinet, or used as a stand‑alone accent on a console or sideboard. Collectors of Ashworth and Mason’s, as well as those interested in high‑Victorian ceramics or bold botanical decoration, will find this an appealing and display‑worthy example.

Overall, this 26 cm Ashworth ironstone dinner plate offers a satisfying balance of rarity, period charm and practical display potential. Its robust ironstone body, distinctive black ground, and beautifully preserved hand‑painted floral border make it a strong candidate either as a highlight within an existing Ashworth or Mason’s collection or as a single, statement antique for the discerning decorator.
