Spain Antique Map R.W. Seale for Rollin's Roman History after D'Anville 1741

An 18th-century copper-engraved map of the Iberian Peninsula in Roman times, titled SPAIN For Mr ROLLIN's Roman History, By Mr D'ANVILLE, Geogr. to ye K. of France, June 1741, and signed in the plate R.W. Seale fc.

Engraved in London by Richard William Seale after the work of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, one of the most celebrated geographers of the 18th century, to illustrate the English edition of Charles Rollin's Roman history. The map shows the Roman provinces with their ancient place names, the Balearic Islands and the coast of North Africa, with scales of Roman miles and French leagues. An engraved note explains the colour key: Tarraconensis, Baetica marked in red and Lusitania in green.

Provenance: ex The Carson Clark Gallery, Scotland's Map Heritage Centre, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, whose label reads "By R.W. Seale for Rollins Roman History c1750", with the gallery's "Guaranteed an original antique over 200 years old" label.

Size: mount 42 x 35 cm. Supplied in a card mount in protective film, ready to frame.

Condition: toning consistent with age.
