This attractive vintage Japanese Imari plate is a classic example of late 19th to mid 20th century export porcelain, featuring the bold palette and intricate decoration that have made Imari ware so desirable to collectors worldwide. Measuring approximately 22 cm in diameter, the plate has a gently scalloped rim and a shallow dished profile, creating a decorative piece that displays beautifully on a wall, stand or within a cabinet.
The front of the plate is decorated in the traditional Imari colour scheme of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilded highlights. The central roundel shows a stylised vase brimming with flowering branches and foliage, executed in fine brushwork with delicate outlines and washes of blue and red. This floral still life motif is typical of Imari export designs and symbolises prosperity and good fortune.
Radiating from the central medallion, the cavetto and rim are divided into alternating panels, a hallmark of classic Imari composition. The red panels are filled with fan and textile-inspired patterns, interspersed with floral sprays and geometric cross-hatching, giving strong visual rhythm and a sense of movement. The blue panels contain dense all-over patterns reminiscent of brocade, combined with scrolling gilt flowers. This juxtaposition of solid blue grounds with intricate gilding against the lively iron-red designs creates the rich, layered look that collectors immediately recognise as Japanese Imari.
The rim follows a lobed, petal-like outline, accentuating the segmented decoration and adding an elegant, almost chrysanthemum-like silhouette. The glaze on the front appears bright and glossy, with the enamels retaining good depth of colour. Any minor firing imperfections or light surface wear visible in the images are typical of hand-produced wares of this period and add to the authenticity and charm of the piece. Buyers should refer carefully to the photographs for a detailed view of condition, including the rim and well.
The reverse of the plate is more restrained, as is customary with many Japanese export pieces. It is glazed in a soft white with four underglaze blue stylised scroll or foliate motifs spaced evenly around the exterior, and a double blue circle within the foot ring. The unglazed foot shows normal kiln grit and wear from age and use, consistent with a genuine vintage item. There is no maker’s mark, which is not unusual for Imari ware produced for export in the early to mid 20th century.
This 22 cm plate is an excellent decorative size: large enough to make an impact when displayed alone, yet also ideal to combine with other Imari or blue-and-white ceramics in a grouped arrangement. It would sit well in both traditional and eclectic interiors, bringing a touch of Japanese artistry and vivid colour to a dresser, console table or wall. Collectors of Imari, Japanese export porcelain, or antique and vintage Asian ceramics will appreciate the well-balanced design, clear enamels and attractive scalloped form.
Overall, this vintage Japanese Imari plate offers an appealing blend of decorative impact and age-related character. Sold as seen, with condition exactly as shown in the photographs, it is ready to be enjoyed as a display piece or added to a growing collection of Japanese porcelain.
