Vintage Pakistani Bokhara Prayer Rug Pushti Mat 3 Guls Hand Knotted Wool 90cm

A vintage Pakistani Bokhara prayer rug in the smaller pushti / mat size, hand-knotted in fine wool on a cotton foundation. The field displays the traditional three-gul (elephant's foot medallion) composition that defines the Bokhara group, executed in classic deep madder red with ivory, indigo and dark brown highlights, all framed within multi-band guard borders and finished with the characteristic mihrab arch of the prayer format.

Measuring approximately 90 cm x 66 cm, this is a compact piece ideal for wall display, as a chair-back throw, layered on top of a larger plain rug, or used in its intended role as a personal prayer mat. The Pushti format historically served exactly this purpose — a small portable rug for individual devotional use.

Pakistani Bokhara weaving developed from the resettlement of Turkmen weavers in Pakistan during the 20th century. The Pakistani workshops adopted the classic Tekke and Yomud Turkmen designs and reproduced them at very high knot counts using fine merino wool, often surpassing the original Central Asian pieces for fineness. This example shows the careful drawing and rich colour palette characteristic of better Pakistani Bokhara production.

Condition: the rug has edge damage along the sides with some loss to the selvedges — please review every image carefully. Despite this it remains in good condition for use or display: the field is intact, the pile is full, and the colours are strong. Sold honestly as a usable decorative piece with the noted condition issues.
