This listing offers a handsome set of vintage Spode “Embassy Green” rimmed soup plates, each measuring approximately 27 cm in diameter. Produced by Spode, Copeland’s China, England, these plates exemplify the refined elegance for which the Stoke‑on‑Trent factory is renowned. The underside bears the printed Spode Copeland’s China mark together with the pattern code, confirming authenticity and helping to date them to the mid‑20th century.

The design is both restrained and luxurious. Each plate is made from fine white porcelain with a deep well and a gently sloping rim, ideal for serving soup, pasta or hearty stews. Around the outer edge runs a broad hand‑applied band of rich gilt following the softly scalloped contour of the rim. Just inside the gold is a fresh Embassy‑green border, a cool, slightly bluish green which gives the service its name. A line of fine dot‑and‑dash gilding separates the green from the white body, adding a crisp, tailored finish that makes these plates work equally well in traditional or more contemporary table settings.

Condition is described as generally good for four plates, with light age‑related signs of use visible in the photographs: minor surface marks, some utensil wear in the well and small rubs to the gilding on the high points of the rim, all consistent with careful, regular use on a mid‑century service. One additional plate is included at no extra value consideration; this spare has a visible crack and is best suited for display or as a backdrop piece rather than for food service. Collectors often appreciate such “bonus” plates for cabinet display or for use as a riser beneath a sound piece, so it can still make a useful contribution to the set.

At 27 cm, these are the larger dinner‑sized rimmed soup plates rather than small soup coupes, giving them impressive presence on the table. They layer beautifully with plain white or gold‑rimmed wares, and they are particularly effective when combined with other Embassy Green pieces such as dinner plates, side plates or tureens to build a complete service. For interior decorators and stylists, the combination of crisp white, cool green and bright gilding offers a versatile palette that reads as both classic and clean, perfect for formal dining rooms, wedding place settings or period‑appropriate photo shoots.

Spode’s Copeland era is highly regarded for the quality of its body and glaze, and these plates are no exception. The porcelain fires to a clear, bright white, the footrings are cleanly turned, and the glaze has retained an attractive soft sheen. For collectors of English porcelain, for those specifically assembling Spode or Copeland services, or simply for anyone seeking a refined set of vintage soup plates with a subtle touch of colour, this quartet – plus the additional cracked example for display – offers an excellent opportunity. Please refer closely to the images for details of the condition of the gilding and the extra plate, and feel free to pair these dishes with complementary gold‑trimmed glassware or silver flatware to create a truly luxurious table.
