A characterful West German pottery planter in the mid-century modern style, executed in the bold colour palette and textured glaze treatment for which the West German studios of the 1960s and 1970s are now widely collected. Generally referred to under the umbrella term "Fat Lava" by collectors and dealers.

From the late 1950s through to the early 1980s, West Germany was home to a remarkable cluster of mid-sized ceramic factories - Scheurich, Carstens, Ruscha, Bay, Jasba, Steuler, Otto Keramik and others - producing studio-influenced decorative ceramics for the European and export markets. The combination of dramatic textured "lava" glazes, strong sculptural forms and bold colour led to one of the most distinctive ceramic outputs of the post-war period. After decades in the wilderness, this output is now firmly back in fashion among collectors and decorators.

This planter measures approximately 18cm in diameter, of generous proportions and suited to a substantial houseplant. Condition is good with the glaze well preserved - see photographs for full detail and any minor period wear to the base or rim.

A great period piece in its own right and an excellent foil for a contemporary or vintage-styled interior. UK tracked delivery; collection from Nottingham welcome.
