Wedgwood black basalt Four Nations jug. Good condition. 19th century.
A fine 19th-century Wedgwood black basalt jug in the celebrated "Four Nations" pattern, depicting the personifications of the four kingdoms of the United Kingdom in classical low relief — a patriotic and decorative design produced by Wedgwood throughout the Victorian period.
Wedgwood's black basalt body — a refined fine-grained stoneware introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768 — produces a deeply rich and uniform matt-black surface, ideally suited to relief work in the antique manner. Black basalt jugs of this kind are widely collected.
Approximate height 8 cm. In good condition throughout with sharp definition to the relief figures and the characteristic deep matt-black surface intact. Please see all photographs for full condition.
An attractive collector's piece for those interested in antique Wedgwood, 19th-century English ceramics, or Royal/British commemorative material.
Will be carefully packed and dispatched fully tracked and insured. UK shipping; international buyers welcome via eBay's Global Shipping Programme.
